The Belt of Truth
Ephesians 6
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
In my church we have recently been learning about spiritual warfare and indeed about the armour of God, which is mentioned here in Ephesians 6.
The belt of truth is the first piece of armour mentioned here which I see as significant. Truth is needed in order for all the other parts of the armour to be effective. Without the security of the truth, our armour would be flapping about all over the place, leaving spaces open for attack.
If we don’t know the truth, we may also be wearing fake pieces of armour. We may think it will do the job, and that it is genuine but if we don’t know the truth, we can easily be deceived.
Would you wear a fake motorcycle helmet? Or install a fake seatbelt in your car? No – they would be useless! They may look genuine, but the quality of the manufacturing is poor and they have not followed certain safety guidelines or undergone the required tests to ensure they are safe or effective.
It is the same with our spiritual armour. We need to know the truth in order for us to be sure our armour is genuine and effective at withstanding the enemy’s attack.
We need to know the truth, everything else rests upon it.
The biggest question of our generation right now is ‘What is truth?’ – we will be looking at this in more detail in the coming days.
Prayer – Jesus, help me to know truth from the lies. I want to live my life for you. Help me to be sure that the spiritual armour I wear is genuine. If I am believing lies, no matter how big, or how small they are, please tell me. Help me to change. Help me to renew my mind and to believe the truth. Amen.
